DEATH OF GENERAL VO NGUYEN GIAP

New Communist Party of Yugoslavia-NKPJ offers its condolences to the people of Viet Nam on the death of the the brilliant and ruthless commander who led the outgunned Vietnamese to victory first over the French and then the Americans General Vo Nguyen Giap.

General Vo Nguyen Giap was a humble and honest communist and staunch anti-imperialist. He was hero of the Vietnamese people and an inspiration to all oppressed peoples.

General Vo Nguyen Giap was known for his fiery temper and as a merciless strategist.

General Vo Nguyen Giap led his army in battle against better-supplied, better-equipped and better-fed enemies. In 1954, he effectively ended more than 70 years of French colonial rule in Indochina, dealing a humiliating defeat to a French garrison in a 55-day siege of the mountain-ringed outpost at Dien Bien Phu. To millions of Vietnamese, this was more than a military victory. It was a moral and psychological triumph over a hated colonial oppressor, and it earned General Vo Nguyen Giap the status of a national and international legend.

NKPJ also extend our deepest sympathy to his family.
